How to send Jira Cloud notifications to Google Chat

Jira Cloud has no built-in Google Chat notifications like it has for Slack and Microsoft Teams. There are three ways to get issue updates into a Chat space. All of them need a Google Workspace account; personal Gmail accounts can't use Chat apps or webhooks.

Option 1: the Jira app for Google Chat

Install Jira for Google Chat from the Google Workspace Marketplace (free, Jira Cloud only). In a space, type /jira_connect, then /jira_settings and pick a project.

Good for: creating and editing issues from Chat. Known issues reported by users: it also notifies you about your own changes, and in some new spaces the project picker fails with an error (see what to do about that).

Option 2: Jira Automation + a Chat webhook

  1. In the Chat space: space name → Apps & integrations → Webhooks → Add webhooks. Copy the URL.
  2. In Jira: Project settings → Automation → Create rule. Trigger: Work item created (or Work item transitioned).
  3. Action: Send web request. URL: the webhook URL. Method: POST. Header Content-Type: application/json. Body: Custom data:
{"text": "{{issue.key}}: {{issue.summary.jsonEncode}}\n{{issue.url}}"}

Use .jsonEncode on any field that can contain quotes or line breaks. Without it, Google Chat rejects the message with 400 Invalid JSON payload, the most common error people hit.

Downsides: one rule per event and project, the webhook URL (which works like a password for the space) sits in plain text in every rule, and automation runs count against your plan's monthly limit.

Option 3: a webhook app

An app installed in Jira listens to issue events and posts them to one or more Chat webhooks. You paste the webhook once and pick projects and events in a settings page. Chat Relay (below) works this way. Other Marketplace apps exist too; check that the one you pick runs on Forge, because Atlassian ends support for Connect apps on 31 January 2027.

Chat Relay posts Jira Cloud updates (new issues, status changes, assignments, public comments) to Google Chat spaces through a space webhook, with up to 10 spaces and per-space projects and events. No automation rules or JSON to maintain. Try the free beta while the Atlassian Marketplace listing is in review. See the setup guide.
