Chat RelaySetup guide
Chat Relay posts Jira Cloud issue updates to Google Chat spaces: issue created, status changed, assigned or unassigned, and new public comments. Each Chat space can get its own projects and events.
Requirements
- Jira Cloud, and Jira admin rights to install the app.
- A Google Workspace account with Google Chat. Personal Gmail accounts can't create webhooks.
- Your Workspace admin must allow incoming webhooks (Admin console → Apps → Google Workspace → Google Chat → "Allow users to add and use incoming webhooks").
1. Create a webhook in Google Chat
- Open the Chat space that should receive updates.
- Click the space name → Apps & integrations → Webhooks → Add webhooks.
- Give it a name, for example "Jira", and save.
- Copy the webhook URL. Keep it private: anyone with it can post to the space.
2. Connect it in Jira
- In Jira, open Settings → Apps → Google Chat notifications.
- Paste the webhook URL into Space 1.
- Pick projects (leave empty for all projects) and the events you want.
- Click Save, then Send test message. A message appears in the space within a few seconds.
More spaces
Click Add another space to send different projects or events to different teams, up to 10 spaces. Remove space deletes its saved webhook when you click Save.
What gets sent
Issue key and link, summary, type, status change, the names of the reporter, assignee and comment author, and up to the first 200 characters of a public comment. Comments restricted to a role or group and internal service desk notes are never sent. See the privacy policy.
Troubleshooting
- 400: copy the webhook URL again from the space.
- 401 / 403: a Workspace admin turned off incoming webhooks, or the webhook was removed.
- 404: the space or webhook no longer exists. Create a new webhook.
- 429: Google Chat accepts about one message per second per space. The app retries.
The last delivery error for each space is shown on the settings page.
